STURGIS, S.D. -- It started on Aug. 14, 1938. A group of nine men gathered in Sturgis, S.D. and raced their motorcycles in front of a small crowd. More than seven decades later, the event has grown into the largest motorcycle gathering in the world, attracting hundreds of thousands of people each year. But behind the excitement of races, stunts, and thunderous tailpipes is a sentiment shared among many of the riders -- patriotism.
PIERRE, SD - Overall tax revenue from the 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is up slightly, at 4.9 percent, when compared to last year at this time, according to the latest figures available from the South Dakota Department of Revenue.
Tax revenues in the Black Hills from this year's rally will continue to be collected over the next few weeks, even though the last official day was August 12.
Sturgis, S.D.—The 2012 Harley-Davidson Ride-In Custom Bike Show was held on Friday Aug. 10 at the 72nd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. With 60 bikes entered this year, the show attracted a large crowd all afternoon.
